Priscilla Queen of the Desert

Never having seen Priscilla Queen of the Desert before, I had no idea what to expect. But when the curtain rose and there were three big guys dressed head to toe in barely-there dresses, inch-thick make up and over the top heels I knew I wasn’t going to regret finally seeing this much-talked about show.

A number of instantly recognisable musical hits throughout helped create a great “sing along” environment. From “It’s Raining Men” to “Go West” you found that you – and the others around you – couldn’t help but get involved, whether it was clapping along or up dancing in your seats.

The show about three drag queens on their journey from Sydney to Alice Springs to meet Tick’s (Jason Donovan) 6 year old son and to stage their own show in a casino is a must see. Although 90% of Priscilla Queen of the Desert is full of glitz and glamour, there is also a serious side which covers homophobic issues the guys face while turning up to a pub in full drag and trying to show the locals their alter egos.

As the three set off in their customised bus, the relationship between Bernadette (Richard Grieve) and Felicia (Graham Weaver) has you hooked from the start. The constant insults and rude innuendos keep you laughing and instantly makes you think of a friend you have with a similar personality (we all have one!)

The great stage set includes an impressive minibus which is actual size and this is where most of the story unfolds.

For my first viewing and having had no idea what to expect, it was indeed a great experience. It was an extremely well put together production and one that had the whole audience involved from start to finish – a truly enjoyable night out.
