Sister Act King’s Theatre

The Bohemians production of Sister Act, based on the popular Whoopi Goldberg classic is both fun and energetic. Although not full of the soulful and familiar songs associated with the original there are a few songs in this production that will make you clap along and will still be stuck in your head throughout the interval.

Aspiring singer Deloris Van Cartier – played by the talented Niloo-Far Khan – is forced to seek refuge in a convent after witnessing her criminal partner commit murder. Under the suspicious watch of the Mother Superior, Deloris helps her fellow sisters find their voices and learns the importance of true friendship.

Technically, this show is great. The sound and lighting were fantastic for an amateur company and each and every costume was fitting for the disco inspired era. The large and impressive stage was also a talking point however – due to the size this lead to some very long gaps between scenes, which was frustrating in an already long show.

Dorothy Johnstone displays a huge and emotional performance as well as playing a hysterically funny, yet prickly Mother Superior. As a huge lover of the original 1992 movie I felt Dorothy’s manner and humour contributed to her excellent execution of Maggie Smith’s lovable character.

Although it may be easy to be put off by my original statement that the expected songs are not included in this production, don’t be – it is still worth going to see. There are multiple funny parts as well as the story line being similar to the original. It was easy to see the energy and fun being had on the stage by the cast and equally as easy to fall in love with the witty and familiar characters.
